Backtracking

Everything has been pretty crazy busy lately, but I'm finally getting around to blogging- figured I better start with my deer hunt (muzzle loader) back in September...
Day 1. September 24.
Met my dad up at Honeycomb Campground, next to Enterprise Reservoir.
Day 2. September 25.
We spent the morning and afternoon hunting and getting more familiar with the area. I had a really cool experience that night as I sat at a watering hole in a natural blind. I had a doe come within probably about 8 yards of me, and wasn't even aware that I was there. One of my neatest hunting experiences as of late.
Day 3. September 26.
Another early morning of hunting without any luck. But as we were out and about dad found an arrowhead and several pieces of other arrowheads. We, of course, were excited and spent the next couple hours with our heads to the ground searching for Indian artifacts.
Did some fishing at Enterprise Reservoir that afternoon, where dad limited out for the two of us. I decided rather than sit there and watch the old man catch all the fish I'd take a nap...
That evening we headed up to the same spot we'd been earlier that day, we saw plenty of deer, but nothing to shoot at. We actually witnessed a fawn being poached. It's so frustrating to see such unethical and inhumane behavior take place. This guy actually took a rock to the fawns head. Dad tried to get the guys license plates but only managed to fall and hurt himself in the process. Not the ideal hunting situation for a bit.
On our way home we spotlighted some fields and saw hundreds of doe and several trophy bucks...
Dad cooked up fish for dinner. It was delicious.
Day 4. September 27.
Much of the same hunting. We went for a long drive, out to the Nevada state line and sighted in the 270 plinked with several other guns. Before we went back we went to Newcastle Reservoir and did some more fishing. We ran into a guy who informed us that "there is a highbred fish. Half white bass and half striper. Called a wiper." The guy was definitely high.
Day 5. September 28.
The last early morning of the hunt. We hunted hard, and all in all saw hundreds of deer. A couple handfuls of small yearling bucks, but no shooters. We broke camp and dad headed home. He managed to blow out a tire on the trailor.
I went back to work for a bit, but headed back out around 7 with Joe Balch. We went out towards New Harmony in his little Jeep Liberty, not intending to shoot anything. We found a trailhead, parked and headed up to an area that had just been burned in a fire several months previous. Hiking through the burn area towards an opening in which the fire didn't engluf, we surprisingly kicked up several doe right away. Within several hundred yards of being in the burn area we saw our first large group of deer that had several bucks within it. I pulled the trigger on what I thought was a decent buck at about 80 yards. Notice in the pictures, this deer was shot in an area with ashes and burnt tree trunks. Who thought we would've found a nice buck in the area? Neither Joe or myself thought we'd be successful on this short evening hunt, and we both looked at each other wondering how we were going to get this deer into his little Jeep Liberty...
He's not a monster, but I'm pleased with my 2009 buck!
